68 Ranks: Roosevelt — E. M. Skinner — Austin — Möller

Brief History

A two-manual organ by Roosevelt was installed in Old St. Paul's in 1859. In the early 1890s, Odell rebuilt the organ, but it is not known precisely they did to the instrument. No Odell pipework is believed to have survived. We do know that all the visible casework of the front organ is original to the Roosevelt installation, and that the Pedal Bourdon (32’,16’,8’,4’) and the Swell Flute Couverte (16’,8’) are also from the Roosevelt.

In 1916 the firm of E. M. Skinner rebuilt and enlarged the organ to three manuals. Surviving from Skinner is the Flute Celeste, Vox Humana, and Nazard from the Swell, and the Erzähler, Clarinet, and English Horn from the Choir. The bottom twelve notes of the Skinner 8' Claribel originally on the Great organ now forms the same of the current Choir Rohrflote. A Skinner 16' Erzähler was transformed by Austin into the current Great Spitzflötes 16’,8’,4’.

In 1973 a new Great Division and console was installed by the Austin Organ Company. Some of the Austin Great still exists.

In 1980, Möller rebuilt, revoiced and rescaled the entire instrument under the supervision of Donald Gillette. In 1991, an Antiphonal division on the west wall of the church was added by Möller, including a horizontal trumpet, called "Trompette Royale." Möller also built a new solid-state console that controls both the front and back organs and allows for multiple combination action memory. A small one-manual (no pedalboard) console was built for the west end which plays most of the antiphonal organ. The bottom 12 notes of the west console manual plays the pedal.

The combination action on the organ console has been updated to 256 levels of memory.
