Music at Old
St. Paul's
Founded by Old St. Paul's rector,
The Rev'd John Sebastian Bach Hodges, Old St. Paul's Choir of Men and Boys first
sang on Easter Sunday in 1873, making it among the oldest such choirs in this country. Currently there
are 17 boys in the choir, all drawn from St. Paul's School in
Brooklandville, Maryland.
A parallel program for girls
began in September 2002. Both the boys and the girls sing with the Gentlemen of
the Choir separately. There are 15 girls currently in the program, all drawn
from
St. Paul's School for Girls
(on the same campus as St. Paul's School) from both the Middle and Upper
schools.
The girls and middle school boys rehearse during the school year four days a week at 7:20 a.m. for
about 35 minutes while the Lower School boys rehearse to 8:15 a.m.
The boys and girls share the
service schedule equally. Both the boys and girls are trained in the tradition
of the Royal School of Church Music, a systematic approach to music and vocal
training.
The 12 gentlemen of the choir are
drawn from the greater Baltimore area and beyond and rehearse on Thursday
evenings.
The choirs sing music typical of the repertory heard in the great English cathedrals,
spanning all the major eras of music history. Their primary duty is to sing at the
10:30 Sunday morning service at Old St. Paul's. They also sing special services and concerts
during the year.
